Summary and Experience

I am an Agronomist, my background is agriculture and more specifically agricultural meteorology/agrometeorology and its application in crop production.

I am interested in crop simulation models applications to define/suggest better strategies for farmers to increase their production through crop management and therefore closing the yield gaps through sustainable frameworks.

Moreover, methods to assess the impact of weather conditions on crop production and agroclimatic zoning is of my interest too.

Testing a methodology to calculate the soybean potential yield in different Brazilian regions.

This project was designed to estimate the soybean potential yield under different conditions in Brazil where soybean is traditionally cultivated. Potential yield is a theoretical yield measurement achieved whether any water limitation and considering an optimum crop management during the whole crop cycle.
We basically estimated the potential yield in two ways: (i) through a agrometeorological yield model and (ii) considering the greatest yield recorded in the database for each location increased by percentages (10, 20 and 30%).
The main conclusion we found that the potential yield ranges across Brazil, according to the genetic material used by farmers, their technological level used on fields, irrigation schemes and other factors.

An agrometeorological approach to include climate production environments for sugarcane crop in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

During my Master thesis I defined an index called “climate efficiency” to couple with a previous soil classification for sugarcane production environments. This definition, which ranges from worst to best soils to grown sugarcane crop, was previously performed considering only soil characteristics, not including climate.
However, our novel was focused in to include climate characteristics on the production environment for sugarcane for a more properly classification and crop management.

Sugarcane yield gap – a crop modeling approach

In this project, which belongs to my PhD thesis, we determine the main sources of sugarcane yield break – water deficit and management practices – by using the agroecological zoning model from FAO.
Furthermore, we proposed strategies which can be used to closing the sugarcane yield gap such irrigation, use of drought tolerant cultivars and deeper soil preparing for a better root development and consequently water uptake.
